You can play as Knuckles in Sonic 1 if you plug in Sonic 1 into a Sonic & Knuckles cartridge	Easy	Hardware	Busted	Sonic & Knuckles was an add-on for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the cartridge having a slot above it to add Sonic 3 onto it on the console for more levels and playable Knuckles, by adding the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridge ontop you could also make Knuckles playable in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, rumours claim you could play as Knuckles and even Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog, when tested you end up greeted with a screen that says "No Way!".
